I have a 98 legacy outback 2.5. It started to have overheating issues a few months ago. It seemed that the thermostat was sticking so I replaced it and no problems for a week or two. Then while driving my temp gauge would bounce up and down. a few days later my radiator blew. So I put a new one in and the next day the water pump blew. Now it has a new thermostat a new radiator and a new water pump and still overheats in a matter of minutes. Any ideas on what the hell is going on?

On occasion, I noticed that when I drive at stop and go traffic my car would stop blowing air and start to heat up but not too much. Then one morning as I was driving to school, it overheated and went all the way to the top and when I reached a stop light, my car started blowing out white smoke from the exhaust. After filling up my coolant reservoir, I checked the next afternoon if the coolant was still there and it was completely gone. I turned the engine on after refilling it and noticed that the fan under the hood wasn't turning/working. I currently am a college student in Tennessee and my parents live across the country so I am hoping someone can help me out and tell me what exactly is going on, what I have to do to fix it, and the cheapest way to go about that since I'm a typical broke college student

We've read many reports lately having to do with Toyota's FT-86 rear-wheel drive sports coupe, but we mustn't forget that Subaru will be getting its own version of this new two-door - it is a joint venture, after all. Our spies have captured this obviously Subaru-bodied mule out testing in Death Valley, showing that things are still on track for the "Toyobaru" to come to market in the near future.

Details are still very slim on what Subaru's version of the FT-86 will offer, and contrary to the brand's image, the new coupe may not be available with all-wheel drive. If that's the case, Subaru will have to offer a lot more in the way of styling (and perhaps power) to differentiate it from its Toyota sister. This latest prototype has sprouted a hood scoop not seen on earlier test cars, suggesting that a top-mount intercooler could be underhood, though it's also possible that this is just the result of some WRX/STI parts being used for camouflage purposes.

Toyota is expected to launch its version of the FT-86 in November of 2011, so keep your fingers crossed for Subaru's version to drop around the same time. For now, see a glimpse of what's to come in our high-res gallery of spy shots below.

According to Automotive News, Subaru is set to release a new, more fuel-efficient version of its boxer four-cylinder engine. The powerplant should be available in both 2.0-liter and 2.5-liter configurations and will be able to offer up a 10-percent boost in fuel economy over its predecessors. The report doesn't detail exactly how the engine goes about gaining its new found efficiency, but it does say the changes are the first significant revision of the company's boxer architecture in two decades.

A Fuji Heavy Industries spokesperson confirmed that the new powerplant is coming, but wouldn't go so far as to say which models would benefit from the new tech. Automotive News reports that other sources claim that the thrifty four-pot will first show up in the Forester both in the U.S. and Japan, paired with a CVT gearbox. The new engine will then begin to crop up in models like the Legacy and Impreza here in the States and the Exiga minivan on Subaru's home turf.

I'm plunging in to Subaru ownership! If anyone has input on choosing between two vehicles, I'd appreciate it.
I have a cabin in Maine that I use about a week a month. It's at the end of about 2 miles of fairly rough gravel road with a couple of hills. I'm looking at a 1996 Legacy Brighton 5 speed, no frills - and an Outback 1997 Automatic, loaded. They both seem in really good shape, and have +/- 135,000 miles. Dont know any history on the Brighton-dealer bought it at an auction and it comes with a 9 month limited warranty.
The Outback has had two owners and seems well taken care of but I havent seen it on the lift to inspect for rust. Owner says the car has no problems.
So here are my questions: 5 speed vs. Auto? Does one ride higher than the other and be better over rough road? Any specifics about those years/models that would affect my't decision? And should I pay for CarFax on these older cars.
thanks a lot,

Washington Auto Road - Click above for high-res image gallery

In our last long term update, I mentioned that my wife and I took the 2010 Subaru Legacy 2.5GT on a two-week road trip up to New England. Our ultimate destination was Bar Harbor, Maine, though a stop in New Hampshire on the way home became our most memorable vacation moment of all time.

After spending Fourth of July at the Mountain View Grand Resort & Spa, we decided to drive up Mount Washington and visit the Mt. Washington Observatory at its summit on our way out of town. I knew little about Mt. Washington, but my wife had visited this tallest peak in New England as a child and claimed she and her family had hiked up to the summit.

The story goes her father had convinced them all to hoof it up to the top rather than hitch a ride on the mountain's Cog Railway by offering them each the price of the train ticket as bribe money. Sounding like something my father-in-law would do, I trusted my wife's memory was accurate and imagined a post card-quality bluff, easily scalable by a trio of children and their persuasive father.

This is the story of how wrong I was, and how the 2010 Subaru Legacy 2.5GT fared as our mule on the harrowing eight-mile ascent up the Mt. Washington Auto Road.

Hello All, I am new here and looking for info on a roof rack system for my 01' 2Dr RS 2.5. Can you folks tell me what roof racks can be used on this car? Also my main concern is the way that the rack attaches to the vehicle...does it clamp onto the plastic side strip or is there a better way to anchor the rack to the roof. I am looking at the roof of my car and see the plastic sort of insert strip closer to the actual roof and I am getting some ideas about that but the only way I have seen racks "want" to go onto this car is using that plastic outer strip....which scares me. On the 2Dr there really isnt much to anchor to...or so it seems. I am ready to start rigging something up. Can you guys enlighten me? Or show me pics of your racks on a 2Dr Please? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

I have not witnessed this yet, but my wife claims that my 2003 WRX smokes profusely on start up and for 3-5 miles afterward. I cannot recreate this. The car runs and drives perfectly for me. She says this has happened twice. Once on Thursday, and again today. So far, I have not found any oil in the overflow, or anything leaking. I am thinking it is probably a turbo seal. What do you guys think?
